Hiking in Morocco's Atlas Mountains
By the Atlas Mountains Hike team
The Atlas Mountains run more than 2,500 km across North Africa, but their wild heart is here in Morocco’s High Atlas — a world of snow-dusted ridgelines, terraced valleys, walnut groves, and red-earth Berber villages. It’s one of the most rewarding and accessible hiking regions on the planet, and it’s our backyard. Here’s how to think about a trip.
What makes the High Atlas special
- Dramatic scenery — from the 4,167 m summit of Toubkal to green valleys threaded with rivers and orchards.
- Living culture — these mountains are home to Amazigh (Berber) communities whose hospitality, food, and traditions are inseparable from the landscape. (More in our guide to Berber hospitality.)
- Real accessibility — the trailhead village of Imlil is barely 90 minutes from Marrakech, so the mountains are within reach of a single day or a full expedition.
Three kinds of trip
There’s no single “Atlas trek.” The range offers three quite different experiences, and the best trip depends on what you’re after:
- Summit treks — climb Toubkal and the high peaks. Challenge and reward, with sunrise from the roof of North Africa. See our Toubkal treks.
- Berber village treks — walk valley to valley at a gentler pace, sleeping in family gîtes. Culture and scenery, no summit required. See our village hikes.
- Day trips from Marrakech — Imlil, Ouzoud Falls, or a zipline-and-culture day. A taste of the mountains with no overnight. See day trips, or read our full day trips guide.
Which trip suits you?
| Summit treks | Village treks | Day trips | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Length | 2–6 days | 2–6 days | 1 day |
| Difficulty | Strenuous | Easy–moderate | Easy |
| Highlight | The 4,167 m summit | Culture & valleys | A taste of the mountains |
| Best for | Peak-baggers, a challenge | Culture lovers, slower pace | Families, first-timers, short trips |
| Summit? | Yes | No (optional) | No |
When to go
The best seasons for high routes are spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October), when trails are clear and temperatures comfortable. Summer is hot in the valleys but reliable up high; winter turns Toubkal into a snow-and-ice objective for prepared groups. We break this down month by month in the best time to climb Toubkal.
Walking with a local team
Wherever you go in the Atlas, a local guide changes the trip. Ours are born in these valleys, accredited by the Royal Moroccan Federation of Skiing and Mountaineering, and work alongside Berber cooks and muleteers — so the logistics, the safety, and the stories are all taken care of. Your trek also directly supports the mountain communities you pass through.
